Bill, in his 80th year

Bill reared his three daughters on the shores of Lake Michigan while employed as a news anchor at WOTV, CH. 8 in Grand Rapids. Earlier in his life, he studied Mayan culture in Yucatan. He served as a signalman on the destroyer USS McCall during the Second World War. After retirement from television in1975, Bill hitchhiked around Europe and North America, as well as in the Orient. In 1980, he began his nearly 2,000 miles of canoeing the Mississippi River. It was on this trip that he met and married Cate. For a honeymoon, they canoed 200 miles of the upper Rhine River. They have recently returned from Moscow, where they lived and worked for four years.

Cate, 52

Cate has led numerous outdoor trips ranging from climbing and caving to skiing in Yellowstone. She started Cedars Alternative Year, a traveling school that traversed the country and Baja, in order for the students to see and do, instead of to read about. Cate reared her children as camping tykes, and they later accompanied her to camps where she developed outdoor ropes courses, climbing areas, and leadership programs for teenagers. Nowadays, she melds these skills in her management seminars to companies throughout the country. She even finds her camping skills useful in many airports and hotels. On their way home from Russia, Bill and Cate vacationed in France, bought a home there and opened a shop to sell Moscow Street Sweeper Jackets--oops!--that's another story...

Donna, 36

Donna has camped, paddled, and skied in the heart of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. She taught Natural History and Camping for Cornell University Outdoor Education. Donna has traveled in Scandinavia, Germany, and Pakistan, and looks forward to adventuring in the United States. Until Donna decided to join A YEAR WITHOUT TIME...the expedition, she worked in the field of information technologies. She recently won top honors in an essay contest sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, which published her essay last May. She hopes the expedition will allow her more time for writing. Donna will also act as our chief computer guru, putting updates from our hand-held Pilot computers onto our web site.

Jen, 30

Jen completed a semester course with NOLS (The National Outdoor Leadership School) in December of 1985. Since then she has been lost in the Olympic Mountains, Wind Rivers, and the Adirondacks (but always managed to find her way out). She attended a year of high school in Dinslaken, Germany. She has taught rock climbing at Cornell University , and until recently, she worked as a computer consultant at Princeton University. For us, the best part of Jen's experience comes around dinner time, as she graduated from culinary school in 1989. Join us for dinner.

Geoff, 19

Born in Denver and a Denverite through and through, Geoff enjoys many outdoor activities. If it is snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, or fishing, it's usually done in the mountains where he loves to be; he includes golf, day trip canoeing and rafting the Arkansas River in southern Colorado, so long as he is outdoors and active. Geoff is a graduate of Regis Jesuit High School in 1996 and recently returned home from school in Minnesota. There, he played soccer for St. John's University. Finally, after also quitting his job, he now looks forward to experiencing the rivers ahead with a talented crew.

Diva, 12

Diva Dog is a 12-year-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever. She has been graciously sponsored by Nutro Products; she loves Nutro's Max Special dog food. She thinks swimming is tops, and is having fun being a River Dog.

Gypsy

Gypsy comes to us from the streets of Moscow. She befriended Cate in Moscow, and has not willingly left her side since. She prefers her age to remain a mystery.
